Buying Furniture on a Budget

Whether you are buying your first home or renting your first apartment, you are going to need to buy some furniture. Though many people will gladly give you some pieces when you are first starting out, there are going to be some things that you really need. However, you aren't going to want to spend too much money on them! Here are some tips to buy furniture on a budget.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask Around

Your parents and friends may have extra pieces of furniture that aren't being used. All you can do is ask around to see if you can find some pieces that may help you get started.

Look at Thrift Stores for Furniture on a Budget

Goodwill, Community Aid, and other thrift stores do take furniture in to sell at a deeply discounted rate. However, if you are going to go this way, you may want to call and see when they usually get furniture in. You are going to need to be there that day because furniture usually goes fast! You may need to go in a few times until you find some good pieces to buy furniture on a budget for your new home or apartment.

Look Online

More and more people are selling their used items online. You can check out Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and other online places to find some deals. If you find something good, you need to act fast. Good items don't usually last long online.

Yard Sales

If you prefer to hit yard sales, you can find some great items at a good price. Some may even look brand new! If you have a few hours to spend looking, drive around and see if you can buy furniture on a budget. You might be amazed at the goodies that you bring home.

Keep an Eye Out for Sales When Shopping for Furniture on a Budget

Most furniture stores offer sales throughout the year, which can allow you to buy brand-new items for a more reasonable price. Watch for any commercials and advertisements that will let you know when the next sale is coming up.

Buy Pieces Separately

Most of the time, when you walk into a furniture store, they offer bundles. You may look at a bedroom set, which may include a bed and a few dressers. Your dining room set may come with a hutch. However, when you are first starting out, you may just want to start with a bed (because you got a few dressers in other places). Your apartment may also be too small for a hutch, so it would make more sense to just buy the table that you want.

Don't Skimp on Certain Items

Quality is important when shopping for furniture on a budget. Though you may be able to get a cheap desk at Ikea, the one that you find at a yard sale may last years longer! That being said, there are some things that you can buy cheaply and those things that you shouldn't. You always need a good mattress, or you will find yourself struggling to sleep every night. You may want to spend a little more on a sofa that is comfortable and will be well-used instead of buying a cheap one that nobody will sit on!

Buy Furniture on a Budget

Before you start shopping, don't be afraid to ask your family and friends if they are getting rid of any older furniture. It may be perfect for you (for now). You should also shop at your local thrift stores. Check out Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist to see what is available. If you do decide to buy a few pieces new, make sure that you keep an eye out for any sales. You can find some really good pieces at a decent price during sales.
